Grande Prairie, Alberta

We pulled out of Lions Campground in Leduc at 9 am to head for Grande Prairie. Weather was lovely after what had been a very windy night in Leduc. We skirted around the SW corner of Edmonton by using the Devonian Way Bypass on up to Stony Plain and then onto Mayerthorpe, Valleyview and finally Grande Prairie. This was all new country to me but Chris had been up this way years ago when she was doing medivacs. We stopped in Mayerthorpe for about an hour at the Fallen Four Memorial which honours 4 young RCMP constables who were tragically killed in the line of duty on March 3, 2005. Their deaths gripped the nation and this memorial is a wonderful tribute to all they accomplished in their all too short careers. The parking lot was large enough for both our RVs. There is a well stocked gift shop and both digital and static displays about the four constables too. The girls left a abrief note in the digital guest book. Definitely worth a visit. It is right across the street from the RCMP detachment. We only saw one highway sign mentioning it before we turned right into Mayerthorpe and no signs in town itself.

After a quick bit of lunch in the parking lot, it was on down the road for another 300 km to Grande Prairie. One certainly can’t complain about the highway to Grande Prairie. With the exception of perhaps a 15 km stretch, it was all 4 lane divided highway with a speed limit of 110 kph. We rolled along nicely at 100 kph for most of the trip. We didn’t see much in the way of wildlife at all today. A couple of deer on the side of road and Chris thought she saw a wolf too, but I missed that.

We rolled into Grande Prairie at 4 pm and are parked at the Walmart on Hwy 43. Us and about 10 other RVs. There are even a couple of fifth wheels in front of us who appear to be camping here for days. We are near a Mr Sub who offers an open wifi connection. We all drove down to Costco to stock up on a few more groceries and then came back to a nice quiet supper prepared by Jane. Chris has been fighting a killer migraine all day so she is off to bed early while I try to firm up how far we are going tomorrow.
