Chicken, Alaska

Chicken Gold Camp Valley

We’ve been having a devil of a time using either of our laptops to get internet access while at Chicken Gold Camp. I spent all day yesterday trying to sort out the problem to no avail. I even used Jim’s computer to download new wifi drivers for both our laptops. We could connect for about 30 seconds and then were booted off. Mike Busby, the owner of Chicken Gold Camp, managed to get things sorted out for us this morning though and lo and behold, we are now connected! Apparently, connectivity becomes sporadic for Vista based computers at times. There is no TV or cell phone coverage here and it felt a little strange to be in the middle of nowhere with no communication with the outside world.

Gold Panning at Chicken Gold Camp

We have had a great time at Chicken and are leaving for Tok, Alaska in the morning. We’ve spent our time panning for gold and relaxing about the camp. Chicken Gold Camp is an experience not to be missed if you are going to Alaska but be prepared for a very rustic setting. If we had to do it again, I think we would have opted for a $10/night basic site with no power or hookups vs the $18/night with power and no hookups that we did take. Power is supplied by the camp’s generator which only runs from 7 am – 9 pm or 14 hours per day, so it doesn’t make much sense to pay the extra $8 if you can’t have power all day. We have solar panels and a generator on the motorhome, so recharging batteries or providing our own power is not a problem.

One of Many Chickens in the Area

There is a post office up the hill, a bar and a corner store but nothing in the way of groceries available at all. The camp runs a pretty good restaurant though and has a patio bar as well. Mike gave Jim and I an excellent tour of the Pedro dredge yesterday morning. The dredge sits on camp property and was quite a machining marvel in its day.

We sure hope you got enough gold while panning to pay for your site. Passing thru Chicken was enough for us. Let me know if you like salmon
