Dawson City, Yukon ( DC, Canadian style)

We arrived in DC on Monday evening and are staying at the Bonanza Gold RV Park in a pull thru site for a couple of nights. Jim and Jane are next to us. Rate was $31.50 per night with our Good Sam discount for 30 amp power, water, sewer and cable. A little much perhaps, but that seems to be the going price in the the north. Gives us a chance to do laundry and such and to relax a little before we hit the Top of the World highway into Alaska on Wednesday.
Yukon Cinnamon Buns (OMG!)
Road was pretty good coming up from Whitehorse, although we did encounter several stretches of gravel. Only one stretch was watered to keep the dust down. The others, we couldn’t even see Jim and Jane in front of us in places, nor our toad behind us either. The dust is a very fine silt and it is everywhere. I used the RV wash at the campground to at least get some of it off the Vue yesterday. Lots of water pressure. Turns out we have 4-5 small stone chips on our Vue’s windshield. Looks like I will have to slow down on the gravel stretches. I was amazed at the amount of gravel thrown up by the motorhome and the stone guard underneath doesn’t seem to do a very good job at stopping them. There was even pebbles on the roof of the Vue!
We did a little gold panning in one of the nearby streams this morning. The girls packed a picnic lunch and we got a shovel and some gold pans from the campground office. None of us managed to add anything to our retirement funds but we had a lot of fun doing it.

We spent the afternoon exploring Dawson City. It is right on the Yukon river and we could see the ferry we will use to cross the river in the morning. DC only has about 1800 people and the town is nestled at the bottom of a mountain. Most of the streets are dirt roads and many buildings have been restored. Canadian poet, Robert Service, has quite a presence in Dawson City and we learned that he originally came to DC as a clerk with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
