California Brown Pelicans of La Jolla

Chris and I were up before dawn this morning and on our way to La Jolla by 6 am and arrived shortly before 7 am.  Morning rush hour was not as bad as it could have been.  I learned of this photography location from Phillip Colla and his website.  He is an excellent wildlife photographer and has a pdf file on his website detailing how to get to La Jolla Cave.  We parked right opposite the bluffs and joined two other photographers arriving the same time as we did. I used my Canon 5D Mk2, 500mm + 1.4x extender and Gitzo tripod while Chris used her Canon xSi with her kit lenses and also  a Canon 70-200, f2.8 IS lens to get some good in flight shots.  Now comes the slow process of processing all our photos in Lightroom and/or Photoshop CS4.  We spent about 2 hours photographing pelicans before grabbing a little breakfast at a local restaurant.  Then we walked over to Children’s Pool to have a look at some sea lions basking in the sun (also described in Phillip’s handout).

Note the fish hook embedded in the pelican’s beak above, just below the right eye.  You can even see fishing line hanging from the eyelet of the hook.  How sad, and there was more than one pelican with fishing line wrapped around them.

We were back in the car by noon and headed on up to Torrey Pines State Preserve and Del Mar.  Unfortunately, the light was not very good for photographs.  We walked the bluffs south of Del Mar watching the surfers for awhile and then headed back to Pio Pico.  We had a great day but were both exhausted once we got back to phaeton place.  Tomorrow will be a rest day for sure.Wave
