Bosque del Apache NWR, Socorro, New Mexico

Moving day today. We were on the road out of St David, AZ by 8:30 am heading east on I-10. We stopped at the Flying J in Lordsburg, NM to top up with diesel, propane and had a bit of lunch in the parking lot before continuing on. It was a great day for a drive. Sunny and warm with clear blue skies. Once we got to Deming, we turned northeast on Hwy 26 and continued onward to I-25 where we turned north to Socorro. The Hwy 26 cut off saved us about 50 minutes of driving versus continuing on I-10 to Las Cruces and then turning north on I-25. Hwy 26 is a great two lane road with new pavement for most of the way and offers a great scenic drive through the hills, as well as up and down into a few canyons along the way as well.

Sandhill Cranes Foraging at Bosque

We exited I-25 at exit 124 south of the wildlife refuge which was a mistake. Not a serious one, but a petit faut pas nonetheless. We had to negotiate about one mile of gravel road before reaching New Mexico 1. After that it was clear sailing north along a paved NM1. We had a good look at the refuge as we drove past it, eventually reaching our destination at Bosque Birdwatchers RV Park, about 3 miles north of the refuge on NM 1 at 4 PM. After a quick check in and set up, we grabbed our cameras to go and check out Bosque. We drove around the 15 mile tour and managed to get a few nice shots along the way. The refuge really is very picturesque. Hoping to catch the sandhill cranes and snow geese at sunrise tomorrow morning.
