Lost Dutchman State Park

Named after the fabled lost gold mine, Lost Dutchman State Park is located in the Sonoran Desert, 40 miles east of Phoenix and is a 15 minute drive from our campground.  Several trails lead from the park into the Superstition Wilderness and surrounding Tonto National Forest. Take a stroll along the Native Plant Trail or hike the challenging Siphon Draw Trail to the top of the Flatiron. Depending on the year’s rainfall, you might be treated to a carpet of desert wildflowers in the spring. Enjoy a weekend of camping and experience native wildlife including mule deer, coyote, javelina and jackrabbit.  The park offers a variety of hiking trails, nature trails, picnic facilities, 72 campsites, a dump station, restrooms, showers, and group use areas. The visitor center sells maps and other publications.
Treasure Loop Trail
Chris and I parked at Cholla day use area and then followed Treasure Loop, Prospector’s View & Jacob’s Crosscut trails for a nice 4 mile hike along the base of Superstition mountain.  The views were spectacular and we took lots of photos as usual.  Given the amount of cars in the parking lot when we got back, it would appear hiking is a popular past time in these parts and with views like we had, it is easy to see why.
Old Wall
After our ninety minute hike we headed back toward Apache Junction and stopped in to visit an old ghost town which purely by coincidence, had a great little cafe & bakery. We toured the many old buildings and shops and even got to see a gunfight on the main street.  The acting wasn’t great but the guns certainly had the desired effect on all the tourists.  I’ve included a few photos from around town.

We popped in to see Gerry and Jessie on the way back into town and were treated to a lovely supper.  All to soon though it was time to say goodbye and head home.  Hoping they will join us in Quartzsite in January for the TRVN rally.
We are out of here in the morning and on our way to Colorado River Oasis RV Resort in Ehrenberg, AZ for one night before rolling into Thousand Trails Palm Springs on Nov 22nd for three weeks.
