Klamath, California

We enjoyed a wonderful supper in Elements restaurant at Win-River Casino last night.  Neither of us gamble but we didn’t much feel like driving around looking for somewhere to eat after a long day on the road.  Chris had salmon and artichokes with a cilantro sauce while I settled for the top sirloin with crab meat, risoto and vegetables.  The portions were very generous and the food was excellent.  Elements is definitely a place to try if you enjoy fine dining.

Another beautiful day as we packed up and left Redding shortly before 8 am.  Our route today had us heading west on Hwy 299 on Trinity Highway over to US-101 and then north into Klamath for a couple of nights.  Hwy 299 was tricky to negotiate in places with plenty of switchbacks both on the way up to the summits and again on the way down.  We pulled over plenty of times to let traffic behind us pass.  We saw one caution sign advising against vehicle traffic with trailers over 35 feet total length but we also saw quite a few semis on the road so we weren’t overly concerned. The scenery through the mountains was absolutely stunning.
Phaeton Place on Beach
Once through the mountains it was clear sailing into Arcata and then north on US-101 towards Klamath.  We stopped at a vista point in Redwood National Park and enjoyed a nice walk on the beach as the waves pounded in to shore beside us.  I’m pretty sure this is the same spot I stopped with our friends Jim & Jane in the fall of 2009.

The last leg of our drive into Klamath was a welcome sight.  The drive on Hwy 299 was only about 150 miles but I was dog tired by the time we hit US-101.  Lots of concentration must have tired me out.  We pulled into Chinook RV Park before 2 pm and basically have the park to ourselves.  We are in here on Passport to America for two nights at $15/night.  Full hook ups, 50 amp and free wifi.  Our site is right on the banks of the Klamath river.  This will be our last stop in California as we move up the road to Thousand Trails South Jetty in Florence, OR.
We found a note on our car this morning before leaving Win-River Casino.  Our friends Allan & Trudy were up skiing for the day and wanted to see us if we were still in town another night.  Unfortunately we’ll have to pass until another time.  Sorry guys but thank you so much asking.  Enjoy your trip to England in August.

Your new format looks terrific! I think I'll check that larger size out myself as it really makes your photos come to life. Nice job!

So that's what our Phaeton will look like on the beach :-) Thanks for giving us a glimpse of what's in store for us someday soon.

299 can wear us out in our 26 foot Dynamax, can't imagine driving your big rig over that road. Congratulations! Safe travels as you continue north
