Another great day of sightseeing in Yorkshire! We started off with a visit to Wolds Way Lavender this morning. It is still early in the season so not much lavender was flowering unfortunately but it was a beautiful sunny day and we enjoyed a nice walk around the property. Casey & Lindsay enjoyed playing a game of chess on a large outdoor chess set while we checked out some of the local birds and butterflies. They have a well stocked gift shop containing all things lavender. Chris picked up some lavender oil while grandma stocked up on some lavender plants for her garden in Filey. Before we left we all had to sample their tea and scones. The lavender scones were very good.
It was on to Castle Howard after that. Lindsay is a big fan of the Brideshead TV series and was very anxious to see Castle Howard where the series was filmed. The castle grounds are extensive with too much to see in just one day. We did the castle and grounds tour for £13 per person. I got some great shots of both the interior and exterior. I also grabbed a few HDR shots on a CF card for processing after we get home. I haven’t been able to find an HDR app for my iPad 2 yet so the processing will have to wait.
After Castle Howard, it was on to Helmsley in the rain for a little supper at the Royal Oak restaurant before heading back to Filey. Portions were very generous and the price very reasonable. I had lamb chops with Yorkshire pudding and fresh vegetables which was fantastic! Casey & Chris each had a double bacon burger with fries, grandma loved the crab salad with fresh potatoes while Lindsay gave an above average grade to the vegetable crumble.
One other thing of note that took my breath away today. We stopped to fill up with petrol after we left Filey this morning. At £1.449/litre for diesel, I managed to pump in £73 worth!! That’s $115.27 Canadian or $119.63 US!!! Guess prices in North America aren’t too bad after all.
Time to turn in after another busy day. We have a hike along the cliff tops from Filey to Scarborough planned for tomorrow morning. Chris & I did it last year and it was fantastic! Hoping for great weather and some good photographs as well.
