Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake
After a very busy day yesterday hiking around Lake Louise, we had a surprisingly restless sleep last night.  Perhaps it was due to the caffeinated evening coffee we had by mistake before bedtime but more than likely it was the 9 trains that rolled past through out the night.  Not complaining, just stating the facts. By 6 am this morning it was getting a little tiring though.  In any event, after a bit of breakfast we drove up to Moraine Lake for some more sightseeing and hiking.  It was a much duller day today than yesterday.  Our hike was short lived though because there was still a lot of snow everywhere.  You can see just a sliver of clear water in the above photo.  The rest of the lake was still 3-4 weeks from being ice free by my estimation.

We walked around for about an hour and then headed back to Lake Louise.  The trail to the tea house was closed off still because of snow as well.  The view of the lake was much better yesterday.  We just didn’t see much sun today at all.  We grabbed a coffee and wrap at the village market and then headed back to Phaeton Place.  We spent the afternoon hiking the complete Bow River loop about 10 km all together.  We were hoping to luck into a photograph of an eastbound train going past the old station and waited there for over 30 minutes but the direction lights were all off so we figured we were done for trains for the rest of the day.  We followed trail 9 across the Bow River and walked back to our campsite via the tent camping area.  The trail was guarded by an electrified fence for 200-330 meters, all in an effort to keep the bears away.
We had a blast today and were pooped by the time we got back to PP around 5 pm.  On to the Icefields tomorrow.  We’ll be overnighting in their parking lot.

I guess we'll just have to go back for a pre-spring break-up visit … both lakes look so beautiful with all the ice and snow.
