Venice Rookery

We’ve been keeping busy in Venice. Yesterday we popped into Nokomis Groves for a little chocolate and key lime swirl soft ice cream.  It was awesome!!  After that we drove along all the fancy homes and properties on Casey Key.  All we can say is “WOW!”  Didn’t see any motorhomes out there though.  Seeing quite a few birds right at Rambler’s Rest but still haven’t seen the hawk and an owl others are reporting seeing in the park.  Went looking for ospreys out near Englewood this afternoon but came up empty.  We popped into Venice Rookery to check out what’s going on late this afternoon.  Not too many people shooting this afternoon.  I had my 70-200 lens with 1.4 converter mounted on my Canon 1D Mk IV hoping to grab a few flight shots but the sun wasn’t in the right spot for the few birds flying about.  I did manage to get a couple of nice shots of  a cormorant and great egret perched down by the water’s edge on the far side of the pond though.  There is a great horned owl occupying an osprey nest on the communications tower of the Florida Highway Patrol office, right above the satellite dish.  The nest is pretty high off the ground but we could see the owl’s head quite clearly on our way out of the rookery around  5 pm.  It will be tough to get a good shot of the owl even with my 500 mm lens though.  Planning on spending a couple of hours at the rookery tomorrow morning.  Hope you like the framing on today’s shots.
