This is the old Conestogo River Trail between St. Jacobs and Conestogo. It dates to the earliest days of both villages. The HVT was a Conestogo/Winterbourne Optimist club project in 1992. It is maintained by the Township of Woolwich and members of the Woolwich Trails Group.
Chris & I packed Teddy into the Vue this morning and went for a short drive to the small town of St Jacobs. We had some things to mail at the post office and then thought we’d try a short hike along Health Valley Trail (HVT). We’ve already walked Mill Race Trail many times and just learned of a number of hiking and cycling trails in this area. HVT runs a distance of only 5.1 km along the banks of the Conestogo river. Most of it is easy walking trails but there are also patches that follow the river through private farm land. We weren’t really dressed for hiking, wearing sandals instead of hiking shoes, but it’s an easy walk and Teddy loved being outside and exploring a new area. Lots of birds in the trees and quite a few geese on the river. We even saw a Great Blue Heron fishing along the river bank. No pictures I’m afraid as I only had my iPhone with me.
Lots of great scenery along the river. We saw quite a few people out walking their dogs, some on leash some not. We strolled about the main street of St Jacobs afterwards stopping in a few shops and we enjoyed a bowl of soup, with coffee and a piece of strawberry rhubarb cake for dessert at the Mennonite bakery. Great food, great prices and we managed to sit outside in the sunshine with Teddy too.
