Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro 2

We’ve been doing a little spring cleanng in Phaeton Place these last few days.  We’ll be moving to a different site next fall and now have a storage shed in which we can leave a bunch of stuff instead of hauling everything with us as we normally do.  I came across a few old Sony Memory Stick Pro cards in a drawer the other day and just had to check out what photographic treasures were stored on them.  Imagine my surprise finding this photo of Chris taken in Filey, North Yorkshire some years ago.  The original photo included a rather unflattering shot of my mother not looking at the camera and standing to Chris’s right.  Sorry mom, but I had to crop you out of the above image!  I processed this image in Photoshop CS6 and Nik Software’s Color Efex Pro.

I’ve been using Nik Software products for about 4 years now and love them all.  However, I haven’t been doing much Black & White work so I never updated from Silver Efex Pro to Silver Efex Pro 2.  I just didn’t see the need to buy Silver Efex Pro 2.  Fast forward to about 4 months ago when Google announced that they had just bought Nik Software lock stock and barrel.  Surprising for sure and everyone was waiting to see what Google had in store for Nik Software.  Well a few weeks ago, Google announced that the purchase price for the entire Nik Software suite was being dropped to only $150 and that currently licensed Nik Software owners (like me) of even only one Nik product would be able to get the entire suite at no additional cost.  Free!  Everyone likes free!  So I sent an email to Nik Software yesterday afternoon and received a link for the latest version of all the Nik Software suite products, including Silver Efex Pro 2, in an email about two hours later.  Of course I just had to play around with Silver Efex Pro 2 after installing it.  I chose this shot of Chris overlooking the North Sea in Filey as my test shot for a conversion from colour to black & white.  I’m liking the conversion very much!  Of course it helps to have a very photogenic subject as well!  So readers…….which shot do you prefer…….colour or black & white?

Hi Mark & Chris! This is my first time visiting your blog, wanted to show my siblings the photos of the owls. Beautiful photography! Our drive home was uneventful (the best type) and there is no snow in Grimsby!!! But it is chilly, only 4 C this afternoon. I prefer b & w photo, but you are correct, very photogenic subject : )

      Hi Pat.

Great to hear you made it home safely. Looks like you are in for some nasty weather through this weekend though. We are all packed up and out of Tanglewood now. Tony & Christine invited us down to Riverbend Motorcoach Resort in La Belle, FL for a few days before we all head up to Disney’s Fort Wilderness for 6 days. The girls will enjoy Disney while Tony & I attend Photoshop World in Orlando for three days of our stay. After that we’ll slowly heading north with planned stops in St Augustine and Myrtle Beach on the way back to Ontario. Hoping we can get together this summer if possible. We want to check out Fifty Point as well.

      Take care.
